I had a lot of trouble with drawing the hands (hopefully all the erased bits aren't noticeable), so I'm glad you like them. Same with the shading, I kinda screwed up on that. >>

Ah, yeah, it's hard to find a middle way. I think the best thing to do is leave it as it is the first time you draw it, and then come back to it later when you're done the rest of the drawing and see if it's too thin/thick. It helps me to notice mistakes.
And really? The shading looks fine to me. :D
